COVID RESTRICTIONS:
Restrictions have been lifted.  We shall try to observe social distancing.  If you have not been vaccinated, you must wear a mask on the beach.   Click here for the  San Diego health order effective June 15, 2021

Refusal to adhere to covid guidelinse will result in being dropped from surf camp with no refund. It is unfortunate, and we will not like to do it, but we must comply with all state/city covid safeguards.

We will not be supplying wetsuitsYou must have your own wetsuit.  THE WATER IS CURRENTLY WARN AT 70 F.    You may not need a wetsuit.  See water temps at bottom of the page, and tips on getting a wetsuit.

Restrictions for 8 and 9 year olds
It is necessary to have a parent or guardian on the beach with them, to take care of their personal needs, as we do not supply that level of care. Also, if you think that they are going to need an instructor with them the entire time while in the water, then we are not able to do that either. We have a 3 to 1 ratio of students to instructors, so if we have to watch an 8 or 9 year old all the time, we are not able to do that.

You also must be aware as a parent of an 8 or 9 year old, that they can be moody.  If the waves too big, water too cold, or too much seaweed, they will want to stay on the beach and out of the water.  They may even want to quit camp.  Be aware if you do sign up your sweet son or daughter, that we are not offering refunds, no matter how cute your kid is.

We do group the real young kids together, keep them in the shallows, and watch them as a group, but we are not going to be able to give to any one student constant attention at all times in the water.

Some kids have been boogie boarding for a while, and if your child has some experience, or seems strong in the water, it will be fine.   But if it turns out that he needs constant attention, know we are not going to be able to do that, and unfortunately we will not be able to refund.

We are in the water most of the time.  We have a break in the middle of the session for snack and surfing related instruction.

TIPS FOR GETTING A WETSUIT
If the water temp gets to 68 and above, there is no need for a wetsuit.  It is happening earlier this year, as of June 10, it is already 66 degrees F, which is plenty warm.  At 69 degrees and above, a wetsuit is not needed, though it does protect against sunburn and board rashes.

If the water temp now only a spring suit is needed.  The water can drop in temp suddenly and for a few days, but it is rare.

Less expensive wetsuits for growing kids
Big 5
Dicks Sports
Play it Again Sports

More expensive wetsuits
Hansens Encinitas
Surf Ride Solana Beach
Mitch’s Surf Shop in Solana Beach and La Jolla

Wetsuit Rentals
Hansens in Encinitas has a lot and decent rate.  (Be sure to check with them, they may not be renting wetsuits due to covid.)

You must go into the shop to have the wetsuit fitted properly. It should fit tight, but not too tight. If it is too lose, it will fill with water. With growing kids, we recommend going the cheaper route at Big 5 or Dicks Sports.

Wetsuits come in different thickness.  There is 3/2 (3mm/2mm) and 4/3 mm.  You will only need the 3/2 for summer.  You can get a full suit or a spring suit. (Spring suit – short sleeves and short legs – not good for colder water/days.)

Feel free to call me if you have questions or issues about obtaining or fitting a wetsuit: 760-635-7873

If you are having problems securing a wetsuit, call me.

Unfortunately with Covid, we don’t feel confident disinfecting wetsuits that fit against the skin.

Good news is the water is already getting warm, early June.  Below are the water temps at Oceanside outer waters, and Scripps La Jolla inner waters.  Scripps is generally the warmest in San Diego.
